Birefringence Measurements in Fibers Without Polarizer
نویسنده
چکیده
A novel method is described which measures the delay between polarization eigenmodes in either highor low-birefringence fibers. The main advantage of this interferometric method is its ability to perform the measurements without the use of any polarizing device. This results in a particularly easy handling and makes this technique very suitable for systematic fiber controls. The obtained accuracy using an all-fiber setup is 0.02 ps/m for highly birefringent fibers and 0.003 ps/m when the birefringence is low.

l'rircuiar polarizers have been used v for difrerent ophthalmic applications, such as ophthalmoscopy,' lens photography,' and corneai endothelial microscopy.3 To the best of our knowledge, circular polarizers have not been applied to fundus photography. A linear polarizer polarizes light in a plane. In fundus photography, it has been used to show the birefringence of the nerve fiber layero and ...

A study of using a single crystal photo-elastic modulator for active Q-switching of a fiber laser is presented. The modulator, which oscillates in a longitudinal eigenmode, was realized with LiTaO(3). This induces due to the photo-elastic effect a modulated artificial birefringence which modulates the polarization of passing light. When used together with a polarizer inside a laser cavity the l...

The Sudarium of Oviedo has been studied intensively with a petrographic (polarizing) microscope. It is composed of pure flax fibers, and they show the same characteristics as the Shroud of Turin. The technology used to prepare the linen cloth appears to be identical to that described for Roman times by Pliny the Elder (Natural History XIX, 3, 16-18). Flax fibers are mostly crystalline cellulose...

A technique for measuring the Faraday effect and the magneto-optic Kerr effect has been developed. In a Sagnac interferometer, two optical beams follow identical paths in opposite directions. Effects which break time-reversal symmetry, such as magneto-optic effects, will cause destructive interference between the two beams. By measuring the phase shift between circular polarization states refle...
متن کاملBirefringence Mapping in an Optical Fibre by Using a Polarization-OTDR
We propose a new analysis method of the Rayleigh backscattered field for the measurement of the birefringence spatial distribution in a single-mode optical fiber. The technique is based on a Polarization-OTDR set-up using a rotary linear polariser. We demonstrate that the birefringence distribution may be deduced from the measurement of the round-trip Mueller matrices derived from three POTDR t...
